Job Summary
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) provides comprehensive inpatient care to hospitalized patients in collaboration with physician hospitalists and interdisciplinary teams. This role supports the delivery of high-quality, efficient, and patient-centered care across medical units.
The NP/PA Hospitalist is responsible for the evaluation, treatment, and ongoing management of adult patients from admission through discharge, while contributing to hospital quality initiatives, care coordination, and patient safety.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Provide comprehensive inpatient care including patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning within scope of practice.
- Perform admission assessments, including history and physical examinations as appropriate.
- Manage hospitalized patients throughout their stay, including daily rounding and clinical decision-making.
- Assist with Emergency Department admissions and initial patient evaluations as requested.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests, procedures, and laboratory studies in collaboration with supervising physicians.
- Develop and implement treatment plans in coordination with the hospitalist team.
- Collaborate with specialty consultants when patients require services beyond scope.
- Support co-management of surgical patients as appropriate.
Care Coordination & Transitions
- Coordinate patient care across interdisciplinary teams including nursing, pharmacy, case management, and therapy services.
- Support safe and timely discharge planning, including patient education and coordination of follow-up care.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
Team Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with supervising physicians and other Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and care coordination activities.
- Work closely with hospital staff and leadership to support high standards of patient care and operational efficiency.
Clinical Quality and Performance
- Support hospital quality initiatives including readmission reduction, patient safety, and care standardization efforts.
- Contribute to improvement of key performance metrics such as length of stay, discharge efficiency, and care coordination.
- Utilize evidence-based clinical guidelines and hospital protocols.
- Participate in clinical review, peer review, and quality improvement activities as appropriate.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate with nursing leadership, case management, pharmacy, and therapy teams.
- Work with Emergency Department staff to support efficient admissions and appropriate patient placement.
- Promote a collaborative, team-based approach to patient care.
Program Participation
- Participate in hospital medicine program meetings and provider meetings.
- Contribute to program development initiatives aimed at improving clinical and operational outcomes.
- Support onboarding and mentorship of new APPs as appropriate.
Patient Experience
- Promote patient-centered care through clear communication with patients and families.
- Provide education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
- Support hospital efforts to improve patient satisfaction and experience metrics.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete accurate and timely documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
- Ensure appropriate coding and documentation practices within scope.
- Maintain all required licensure, certifications, and credentialing requirements.
Operational Efficiency
- Support hospital throughput initiatives including efficient admissions, timely discharges, and care coordination.
- Collaborate with hospital leadership to address operational challenges impacting patient flow.

Education & Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
- Current board certification (AANP, ANCC, or NCCPA).
- Active, unrestricted NP or PA license in the applicable state.
- DEA registration (or eligibility) required.
- Prior inpatient or hospital medicine experience preferred.
Work Environment
NP/PA Hospitalists are part of a team providing inpatient medical coverage, typically working structured clinical schedules in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary teams.
